How Girls See The World

#girlgaze is on a mission to close the gender gap by creating visibility and tangible jobs for girls behind the lens and this timely book, from photographer and media entrepreneur Amanda de Cadenet’s visionary focus, features a beautiful and powerful collection of images capturing how young women perceive the world.

This inspiring must-have for feminists and creative alike showcases the work of a diverse collective of female-identifying photographers mixing candid and formal photos of females living their lives: moments of significance caught in a fraction of a second at home, on the streets, remote countrysides, and in war-torn countries. It's Messy:
On Boys, Boobs and Badass Women

Out Now!

Amanda de Cadenet has interviewed and photographed many of the most influential figures in popular culture, became the CEO of her own female focused multimedia company, and has evolved as a leading voice for feminism. In It’s Messy, Amanda tells her story in this deeply personal collection of essays that honestly addresses the issues, concerns, and experiences relevant to women today.

Through her interview series, The Conversation, Amanda engages notable women—including Hillary Clinton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jane Fonda, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, Gabourney Sidibe, Eva Longoria, Ivanka Trump, Rita Ora, and Arianna Huffington—in no-holds-barred conversations about what it really means to be a female today. In It’s Messy, Amanda offers readers an extension of that conversation, as well as an inside look at her own journey through her intensely personal and bold, yet universal experience of being a woman.

In this poignant, intimate, and hilarious collection of essays, travel back in time to Amanda’s years before The Conversation for a portrait of childhood fame, teen motherhood, and “getting a job that doesn’t suck, even if you went to Juvie.” With raw honesty and intense passion, Amanda shares her life in times of both good and bad, synthesizing lessons she’s learned along the way. In “How to parent in the time of Trump,” Amanda shares her experience of reacting to our current political reality as a mother and “Porn Culture and its affect on my Vagina” examines the impact that porn is having on practically all of us.

A curated collection of images taken by female photographers that demonstrates the power of the girl gaze.

What We Do

For a woman breaking into the photography industry, the obstacles are unquestionably hard. Our mission is to support girls behind the camera.

girl•gaze

| girl |

Taking back the word girl, we are pushing back against the cultural projections and traditional gender roles imposed upon girls from the outside world, media and culture. Instead, we aim to represent the intelligence, creativity, complexity and diversity of girls’ experience—across nation, ethnicity, race, religion, sexual orientation, economic background. It is up to those who identify with being a girl to break the boundaries and determine their own identity, sexuality, and beauty.

| gaze |

We are telling stories and creating images by taking the camera (or any medium) into our hands to express our viewpoints, reflect our states of mind, share our interests—whether in politics, fashion, tech, beauty, business—and to show the world how we see it.

#Girlgaze is a digital media company, based in Los Angeles, that promotes and highlights the work of female Gen Z photographers and directors. Our mission is to close the gender gap by creating visibility and tangible jobs for girls behind the lens. With over one million Instagram submissions and counting, #Girlgaze is expanding into original video content, IRL events and eCommerce in 2017. Founded in 2016 by Amanda de Cadenet, the creator of the Conversation, #Girlgaze understands Gen Z and collaborates with brand partners such as Gap, TeenVogue, Warby Parker and more.

Who We Are

The curators for Girlgaze are all women trailblazers in their own right. Whether in fashion or documentary photography, in front of the camera or behind it, these women are championing the female gaze today.
